Woodcrafting Questions and Tips
Special tip

Always refer to the photo when working on a kit. The photo may help you figure out the steps and finishing instructions.

Keeping things neat

If you like to make things with screws, nails, brads or other small woodworking supplies, ask Mom for old film canisters or baby food jars to help store these items.

Find a large box or plastic bin. Decorate the outside of it and write your name on it in fun and crazy lettering. It's a great place to store all your woodworking supplies.

Keeping clean

Wear old clothes when woodworking. Always cover your work area with newspapers or plastic garbage bags.

Wrap tape, sticky side out, around your fingers to pick up spilled nails or screws. It works great if you spill them on carpet.

Painting

Always keep your paintbrushes washed out and NEVER leave paint on them. You can use an old glass jar or a large butter tub as a washtub. Dry your brushes on a folded paper towel lying flat on your work surface.

Cleaning up

Always clean up your work area when you are finished. This will make Mom really happy!

Read labels

When crafting, always read the labels on products thoroughly and follow the instructions. The companies that make craft supplies have already tested everything and know exactly how their product should be used to get the best results.

Be safe

Keep tools in a safe place, where your little brothers or sisters can't get them. You can always ask an adult to help you or to supervise while you're using tools.

Internet Safety Tips
It is very important for you to stay safe while on the Internet. Here are a few pointers to remember.

Always tell your parents what you're doing online. It's their job to keep you safe!

Tell your parents anytime you post something online or send an email to someone you don't know.

Use only your log-in name and/or email address when chatting, sending email or posting something to a bulletin board. Never give anyone (no matter how nice they sound!) personal information like your name, address, or phone number.

Don't tell anyone your passwords, even your best friend! Your online service will never ask for them, so neither should anyone else.

Always delete email from someone you don't know, especially if they have attachments. Never open an attachment unless you know the person was sending it to you. Attachments can be bad viruses that can mess up your computer!

People are not always as nice, cute, or funny as they may sound online. Never make plans to meet an online "friend" in person or even on the phone.
